Shoppable TV: What Early Adopters Have Learned

A viewer sees a product on television, reaches for a phone and starts searching. How much of that interest reaches the retailer? Shoppable TV gives broadcasters and advertisers a more direct route from viewing to a product, an offer or a checkout. Its commercial value depends on how that journey works and how much additional business it produces.

For channel owners, the opportunity includes interactive advertising, programme sponsorship and commerce partnerships. Each needs a clear agreement about inventory, customer ownership, costs and revenue. A purchase button creates another responsibility for the operation as well as another opportunity for sales.

Shoppable TV Starts with a Clear Next Step

Viewers encounter several different journeys under the shoppable label. A QR code can open a product page on a phone. A supported television app can offer remote-controlled browsing or an add-to-cart action. A viewer may also request information and complete the purchase later. Decide which action your campaign is actually designed to encourage.

Amazon's May 2024 announcement described remote-enabled product carousels and pause ads, including cart and email actions. These are examples from Amazon's own ecosystem, with specific account and device integrations (Amazon Ads format announcement). A broadcaster distributing to multiple streaming services must confirm what each destination supports.

Make the buying journey easy to finish

Roku's Waterpik case study, published in August 2024, describes an explicit remote-control shopping prompt, a sale offer and checkout using linked payment information. Its underlying campaign ran in May to July 2023 (Roku's Waterpik case study). Treat it as a platform-produced example, rather than a current market-wide benchmark.

Test the full journey from a sofa: visibility, time to respond, phone handoff, product selection and payment. The destination should preserve the advertised product and offer. Sending a viewer to a retailer's homepage creates another search task. A large purchase may need saved information or a follow-up conversation rather than immediate checkout.

Protect the reason people are watching

Place commerce where it fits the programme and the rights agreement. A cookware offer around a cooking segment is easier to explain than an unrelated overlay during a decisive sporting moment. Keep captions, scores and essential graphics readable. Give viewers a clear way to dismiss an interactive layer and continue watching.

A conventional spot can still deliver broad reach while an optional commerce action serves interested viewers. Direct sponsorship, demographic spot sales and addressable inventory can coexist. Agree who controls the interactive layer and ensure the same impression or order is not credited repeatedly across those arrangements.

Build the Workflow Beyond the Ad Break

SSAI can stitch an advertisement into a stream. It does not, by itself, supply remote-control interaction, a product catalogue, payment processing or order fulfilment. A QR code embedded in the video offers a different route: the interaction happens on the viewer's phone.

IAB Tech Lab's SIMID separates interactive creative from the video asset and provides communication with the player, including support for SSAI workflows (IAB Tech Lab: SIMID). This is a technical interface, not a universal shopping service. Verify actual support in each app, player and advertising integration before selling an interactive campaign.

Assign operational owners for the product feed, availability, offer expiry, landing page and measurement events. If an item sells out, someone must remove the offer or provide an approved alternative. Check replay, catch-up, territory restrictions and different screen sizes. An offer that worked during a live broadcast can become misleading when the programme is watched days later.

Measure Sales That the Campaign Actually Adds

Keep impressions, scans, product views, basket additions and completed orders separate. A cart addition is an intermediate event. Attributed orders depend on the identity match, observation window and attribution rules; they can include purchases customers would have made anyway.

The November 2025 IAB and IAB Europe incrementality guidelines recommend choosing methods that suit the business question and provide a credible counterfactual (IAB commerce measurement guidelines). For a pilot, agree an appropriate comparison or holdout with the measurement partner, document limitations and separate observed attribution from estimated incremental impact.

Define whether results describe people, households, devices or transactions. Allow for cross-device journeys, duplicated orders, returns and cancellations. Agree data access, retention and consent responsibilities before launch. A platform report can be useful without representing every purchase or proving that the television exposure caused it.

Agree the Economics Before Running a Pilot

Consider a hypothetical cooking channel testing one retailer and a small cookware range for four weeks. It retains its normal ad sales and adds an optional commerce placement under a separate agreement. This is a planning example, not an Evrideo customer result.

The channel first needs to establish whether it receives a fixed sponsorship fee, an interaction payment, a commission on eligible orders or a combination. Retail basket value belongs to the retailer; it is not automatically broadcaster revenue. Model the channel's share after cancellations, platform fees, creative work, integration, measurement and support.

  1. Choose a narrow scope: one programme context, retailer, product range and supported device group.
  2. Agree commercial ownership: inventory rights, commission rules, attribution window, customer service and refunds.
  3. Validate delivery: test the exact offer, interaction, fallback, expiry and purchase confirmation.
  4. Set expansion criteria: require acceptable viewing behaviour, reliable operations and a positive channel contribution after the extra costs.

Report the advertiser's sales outcome and the broadcaster's margin separately. Watch abandonment and complaints alongside conversions. A successful pilot should establish whether the experience can be repeated commercially without making the channel harder to watch or operate.

Give Shoppable TV a Measurable Role

Shoppable TV gives a broadcaster another way to connect relevant content, advertiser demand and viewer intent. Start with a supported journey, clear responsibilities and an agreed test of additional value. Expand when the commercial evidence and operational reliability justify it.

Evrideo's cloud broadcast platform and AdBoost monetisation capabilities provide parts of the channel and advertising workflow. A shoppable deployment also needs suitable player, retailer and commerce integrations. Talk to our team about your distribution environments and monetisation goals to establish the required scope.
