Missing programme file: can an AI agent help before airtime?
The programme starts in 30 minutes and the missing programme file has triggered an alert. Your automation has already checked the playlist, media asset management system (MAM) and quality-control status. The operator now needs an answer: can the planned programme make transmission, and what should replace it if delivery fails?
An AI agent can help investigate that exception across systems. Its contribution depends on finding evidence, revising a plan and returning a usable recommendation before the decision deadline. Checking whether an asset exists is routine automation.
Give the missing programme file a decision deadline
Start with the latest safe decision time. Work backwards from airtime through transfer, processing, quality control (QC), operator review and loading the transmission system. Allow a margin based on rehearsals of your own workflow.
A supplier’s upload estimate covers one part of that journey. An agent should combine job progress with measured processing times and identify unknowns. If the margin disappears, the fallback decision moves forward. The search must have a stop time. Enforce it outside the model, with timeouts on tool calls and a handover when the budget expires.
In this hypothetical example, the scheduled programme runs for 24 minutes inside a 30-minute slot, with 6 minutes of advertising and junction material. The original master is still uploading. An approved repeat is already available, but a contract amendment may restrict its streaming territory.
Follow evidence across systems
The agent starts with the exact programme, episode and version identifiers. It checks the transfer job, finds the supplier’s revised delivery message, then follows a reference to another master in the archive. That candidate has the correct duration but the wrong language track.
It records the rejection and investigates the repeat’s rights amendment with the responsible operator. This branching investigation is where agentic AI can reduce searching and coordination. A fixed workflow remains appropriate when the exception and response are already known.
Keep each finding linked to its source, timestamp and asset version. A fresh filename doesn’t establish editorial approval. The EBU QC model provides structured concepts for QC items and reports; operators still need to associate those reports with the actual version being considered.
Proposed operating model, not a claim of an existing autonomous Evrideo feature. Source material supplies evidence; it cannot grant permissions. Read back the resulting schedule and verify output.
Define what makes an alternative usable
Maintain a short eligibility record for every candidate. Check the programme identity and cut, licensed territory and platform, transmission window, editorial restrictions, audio and captions, technical acceptance, duration and break structure.
Separate facts from pending decisions. “Rights confirmed by the licensing owner at 18:42” is actionable. A model’s interpretation of an ambiguous contract still needs an authorized decision. Avoid sending confidential contracts or programme material to external models without approved data-handling arrangements.
Check the complete asset
A completed transfer and a matching checksum establish different evidence from programme suitability. EBU’s QC layers cover wrapper, bitstream, decoded audio/video and programme layout checks. Run the applicable checks on the selected version, including any required human review.
Use exact durations and frame rates. A replacement that is 20 seconds shorter needs an approved junction adjustment. Preserve advertising commitments, SCTE signalling and caption continuity, then identify any electronic programme guide (EPG) or partner-listing changes. Send unresolved commercial impacts to the responsible team.
Make the clock visible
The following checkpoints are illustrative, chosen for this scenario. Your timings depend on file size, processing capacity, rights procedures and transmission-system behaviour.
- T−30Investigate and prepare
Check the original delivery while assembling evidence for an approved fallback.
- T−15Choose the viable route
Escalate any unresolved rights or readiness question. Stop open-ended searching.
- T−10Approve the revision
Validate timing and break structure, then apply the specifically approved schedule change.
- T−5Confirm transmission readiness
Read back the loaded revision and preview video, audio and captions. Invoke the rehearsed contingency if acceptance fails.
Minutes before airtime; example deadlines, not service guarantees. After the change is committed, a late-arriving original stays quarantined from automatic substitution.
The operator should see a compact decision packet: original delivery status, preferred replacement, rejected candidates, evidence gaps, timing changes, approval owner and contingency. Preserve the detailed investigation log behind it.
Protect the schedule from a helpful mistake
Limit the agent to the systems and actions needed for this incident. OWASP’s Excessive Agency guidance recommends restricted functionality and permissions, with human approval for high-impact actions. Enforce those limits outside the model. Treat supplier messages and retrieved documents as untrusted input.
Approval should identify the channel, transmission date, asset version and schedule revision. Recheck the schedule immediately before applying the change. HTTP If-Match supports conditional updates where an API implements entity tags; other integrations need an equivalent version check. If someone has edited the schedule, return the revised proposal for review.
Retries also need an explicit policy. After a timeout, inspect whether the first operation succeeded before repeating a change. Apache Airflow’s task guidance stresses complete results and repeatable outcomes on reruns. Applied here, that means stable operation identifiers and evidence of the final state, rather than repeated schedule writes.
Rehearse before delegating
Test a stalled transfer, stale QC report, expired rights window, missing caption file, simultaneous operator edit and unavailable agent service. Measure time to an approved decision, operator effort and incorrect recommendations. Include cases where the right outcome is escalation.
Keep the documented fallback available to operators throughout. The channel must retain its ordinary control path if the model, connector or evidence source fails.
For a missing programme file, useful agentic assistance produces a timely, evidence-backed decision and confirms what actually reached transmission. Evrideo’s Broadcast platform provides the scheduling and playout foundation. Discuss your exception-handling process with our team, including which checks already run automatically and where investigation still consumes operator time.
